Preventing Ingrown Hairs After Waxing Services

There’s nothing worse than an unsightly, painful red bump cropping up on your face, bikini line or underarms. If you’ve ever had one, you know what we’re talking about: dreaded ingrown hairs.

Some individuals are more susceptible to ingrown hairs, but they can happen to anyone. An ingrown hair occurs when hair regrowth becomes trapped beneath the skin. In some cases, the hair is merely an ugly nuisance, but in other scenarios, it can become painful, irritated, itchy and even have pus. Eeeeewwwww!

At Bare Cactus, we strive to ensure that when you get a waxing service, it leaves you smooth, smooth, smooth. That’s why we created this guide to prevent ingrown hairs. If you’ve ever had an ingrown hair, no doubt, you will make this your go-to pre-wax regimen. If you haven’t ever experienced ingrown hairs, well, why take chances?

Your Guide to Preventing Ingrown Hairs

Wax regularly. Keep those wax appointments on the calendar in a consistent cadence. Every four to six weeks should allow for sufficient regrowth. Routine waxings also make the hair sparser and softer, reducing the risk of ingrown hairs.

Choose an expert esthetician. You know what they say, technique is everything. When it comes to waxing, it’s the truth. Your esthetician should ask about your skin’s sensitivity and examine the coarseness of your hair. The wax must be applied in the direction of the hair’s growth and removed in small, deliberate pulls opposite the hair’s growth.

Exfoliate and moisturize routinely. Make exfoliation and moisturizing a part of your regular routine--two to three times per week, particularly the weeks before and after your waxing appointment. Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells that can promote the occurrence of ingrown hairs.

Avoid irritants. Avoid tight-fitting pants, excessive sweating, swimming or soaking in any water, and very hot showers within 24 hours of your appointment. These can all cause irritation and increase the risk of ingrown hairs.

Don’t shave between waxings. It’s tempting to shave between waxings, especially if it is an “emergency”. After all, an unexpected trip to the beach or an impromptu pool party does happen. When it does, you might consider a different swimsuit style so you can avoid the razor between waxings, which increases the risk of irritated skin and ingrown hairs.

Talk to your Bare Cactus esthetician about the best products for exfoliating and moisturizing between waxings. There are lots of great options out there that will fit every skin type and budget.
